How to Breed Goldfish
If you’re currently a goldfish owner, or are looking to start owning goldfish, you may want to consider breeding your goldfish. However, contrary to what some people may think, breeding goldfish does not simply involve placing male and female goldfish in the same tank. To breed your goldfish, you need to acquire some basic knowledge about how goldfish mate, as well as the best method you can use to breed your goldfish. Here is a general guide with some tips to help you understand how to breed goldfish.
Keep Your Fish Separate
Prior to even setting up a breeding tank, keep your male and female goldfish in separate tanks. Give your goldfish a high-nutrient diet, rich in live foods and fresh ingredients. You can purchase worms, as well as brine shrimp from most pet supply stores, either frozen or live.
Set up Your Breeding Tank
Designate a tank that will only be used for breeding. Make sure that the water filter that you use for the tank is operational, and include plants that can serve as anchors for goldfish eggs.
Regulate the Temperature
Prior to adding any fish, regulate the temperature in your breeding tank. The temperature of the breeding tank should be around 64 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s best to also keep your separate male and female tanks at 64 degrees, in order to prevent shock when the fish are introduced to the breeding tank.
Select a Breeding Pair
Goldfish are most fertile when they are three years old. Since the age of goldfish is sometimes difficult to tell, try to use the size of the fish as a guide. However, most goldfish are able to breed when they are one year of age, though they may not be as fertile.
Prime the Breeding Tank
Most goldfish will breed when triggered by a rise in temperature. Once your fish are in the breeding tank, raise the temperature to around 68 degrees Fahrenheit. This will stimulate the pair to breed.
