Welcome to Goldfishtypes.net!
This website is dedicated to providing you with informative, useful information about the different types of goldfish. Many people aren’t aware of how many wonderful, unique and interesting types of goldfish actually exist. Many of these types were created through a process known as “selective breeding”, which enhances certain traits of a fish’s genetic line. Though today’s goldfish are slightly less hardy than their ancestors, they are available in a number of colors, sizes and breeds. Today’s goldfish are a great addition to any fish tank, and provide a beautiful variance that represents the diversity of the types of goldfish that are currently in existence.
History of Goldfish
The first goldfish breeds were actually created from a genetic mutation that occurred in ancient China. Certain types of pond carps began displaying odd coloration patterns, which were much different from the characteristic silver of the carp. Some of these fish started to show yellowish orange and golden color patterns. Once this mutation was identified, more of these fish began to be kept in indoor tanks to display to important guests. Remarkably enough, this all took place during the Tang Dynasty! Today, goldfish are said to be the most popular type of fish to be kept by aquarium owners.
In current times, there are many different color variations of the “common” goldfish. Goldfish come in a number of colors, including black, grey, gold, white and yellow. In addition to this, some goldfish have been developed with different physical features from other goldfish, such as the “telescope eyes” seen on certain breeds of goldfish, or the types of goldfish that have elongated fins. The size and shape of a goldfish’s body can vary as well, from a slender curve-like shape to the more robust “egg-shaped” body seen on certain breeds.
